Tervis Tumbler Enters Team in Relay For Life

North Venice, FL, April 21, 2009 - Employees of Tervis Tumbler Company will be working through the night on April 24th, but not making their famously insulating tumblers.  Instead, they will be walking for a good cause.  The Tervis Tumbler Team will participate once again in the American Cancer Society’s annual Relay For Life event being held at Laurel Nokomis School.  The Venice Relay For Life event draws 35 teams from across the area to join the fight against cancer by walking around a track overnight for up to 18 hours – each team must have a representative on the track at all times.  Teams also raise money for the cause by having fundraising activities during the event – for instance, Tervis will be selling chicken sandwiches early in the evening and in the wee hours of the morning they will be tempting participants and spectators with peanut butter & jelly sandwiches and milk.  The evening kicks off on a very emotional note with the opening lap being walked by cancer survivors (anyone who has ever been diagnosed with cancer) – a number of employees and family members of Tervis will be involved in this first lap as well.  Throughout the evening the teams camp out, barbeque and play games, all while keeping the relay going.

After the sun goes down, the Luminaria Ceremony is held where hundreds of luminaria bags (bags filled with sand and a lit candle) line the track in honor of those who have lost the battle against cancer and those who fought and survived.  A hauntingly beautiful reminder of the work that still needs to be done to eradicate cancer from our lives and the importance of the contributions the participants are making in that quest.  “We are supporters of the American Cancer Society because everyone knows someone who has been touched by this disease and we want to do our part to eliminate it from our lives” stated Laura Spencer, CEO of Tervis.

The Relay For Life is just one of the ways Tervis employees help the cause – throughout the year the Tervis Relay Team has bake sales, sponsors Bingo Night, sells snacks/candy to other employees, hosts an ice cream social, sells “Cancer Sucks” t-shirts and has raffles – with all contributions going to the American Cancer Society.  In 2008, the team raised $5,000 and in 2009 they hope to meet and hopefully exceed that amount.
