Our Story

The world’s first insulated tumbler is invented by Detroit engineers Frank Cotter and G. Howlett Davis who name their new company by combining the last three letters of each their last names. Thanks to a lucky coin toss the company was named “TERVIS” instead of the less appealing “VISTER”.

Outdoor enthusiast and entrepreneur John C. Winslow purchases the Tervis product rights and relocates the manufacturing facility to Osprey, Florida, where the first Tervis retail storefront is established. To commemorate the move, the 12oz tumbler is introduced, along with different color inner and outer pieces of the “original” tumbler.

Winslow goes door to door and dock to dock, selling the advantages of his easy, on-the-go tumbler that is perfect for the outdoor Florida lifestyle. Soon Floridians everywhere are seen lounging poolside and aboard boats with their new favorite tumblers in hand.

The most popular tumbler size, the 16oz, is introduced, generating even greater fanfare than other fashionable items of the time - big hair, fanny packs, leg warmers and anything neon. Not surprisingly, glitter tumblers also debuted.

Norbert, and later his son Rogan, lead the company to massive expansion via licensing agreements and various product innovations.

The mug debuts just as Americans go crazy for specialty coffee. Soon after, personalization becomes an option, allowing people to put their names on their drinkware to help keep track of their lattes.

In 1995, Tervis joins forces with their first official license, making them the big cup on many college campuses throughout the country.

The “Works Like Magic” tagline is introduced, recalling the brand’s early heritage, circa 1940’s and 50’s. Straw lids and clear straws are now available.

America’s thirst for hydration grows and so does Tervis. The 24oz is introduced - it goes on to rival the original 16oz for the most popular offering.

Tervis debuts its first e-commerce site. Now customers anywhere in the United States can order their favorite drinkware from the comfort of their home 24/7.

The world’s favorite drinkware becomes the most cusomizable as well. Tervis introduces the CustoMYzer to personalize your drinkware better than ever.

The double wall insulated Water Bottle debuts. It quickly becomes a favorite among the active crowd as they take them to gyms, on bike rides, hikes and anywhere else their adventures lead them.

Tervis diversifies its drinkware portfolio by introducing a line of double wall insulated Wine Glasses - as well as a sippy cup, entertaining collection and beer mugs.

Tervis applies the double-wall insulated technology it pioneered in 1946 to a brand new material - Stainless Steel. Direct printing is done in the United States at the Venice factory, allowing for fast turn around times and a higher level of customization than any other competitor.
